Do I need an external antenna?

The FX3100 series indoor router provides optimized coverage using its internal antennas. You can use the external TS9 antenna ports to extend coverage by placing an antenna near a window or through a window or wall.

The external antenna ports cover mid-band frequencies from 1700-2700 MHz, which cover LTE/5G bands B2/n2,B4,n25,n38,B41/n41,B66/n6, and high-band frequencies from 3300-4200 MHz, which cover bands B48/n48,n77. NOTE: Band coverage depends on region, service provider, and specific location. Check with your service provider for the bands available in your area.

For the external antennas to provide signal improvement, the following conditions must be met:

  • Your service plan and coverage area must provide the specified bands.
  • Your coverage area must be mid to low (<100 dBm RSRP).
  • The external antenna must cover the specified frequency range.
  • The external antenna must have higher gain, including cable loss, than your router (4.1 dBm gain).
  • The external antenna must be installed according to the manufacturer’s recommended location and orientation.

If these conditions are not met, the external antenna will not improve performance.

To enable the external antennas:

  1. In the Admin web UI, navigate to Settings > Preferences.
  2. Select the external antenna(s) you wish to enable.
  3. Click Save Changes.
