What is Power over Ethernet (PoE)?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology can transform network deployment and management by allowing Ethernet cables to transmit both data and electrical power simultaneously. A single cable can thereby provide networking and electrical power to devices such as IP cameras, wireless access points (WAPs), VoIP phones, and other networked devices.

Properly used, this technology enables more resilient and effective network solutions. By leveraging existing Ethernet infrastructure, PoE simplifies installations, reduces costs, and enhances network flexibility.

A typical PoE system has a simple three-part structure

A PoE system includes:

  1. Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE): This is the device that supplies power over the Ethernet cable. It can be a PoE switch or a PoE injector.
  2. Ethernet cable: Usually a Cat5e or Cat6 cable that transmits both power and data.
  3. Powered Device (PD): This is the connected device receiving power and data through the Ethernet cable, such as an IP camera, wireless access point, outdoor CPE, or router.

Different standards support several device requirements

PoE technology conforms to standards set by the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers Standards Association (IEEE), which define the media access control of wired Ethernet. There are several PoE standards, each of which support different power levels to accommodate various device requirements. These include:

  • PoE (IEEE 802.3af): Provides up to 15.4 watts of power per port and is ideal for devices such as IP phones and basic wireless access points.
  • PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at): Delivers up to 30 watts per port, catering to devices with higher power needs such as pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras and advanced WAPs.
  • PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt): Offers up to 60 watts (Type 3) or 100 watts (Type 4) per port, suitable for high-power-consuming devices like digital signage, video conferencing systems, and laptops.

PoE simplifies network deployments, improves cost efficacy, reliability, security

There are numerous benefits to using PoE technology, primarily with regards to its simplicity of deployment, cost-efficiency, and greater reliability and security.

By eliminating the need for separate electrical wiring, devices can be installed in locations without electrical outlets. Installation is greatly simplified, facilitating easier relocation and deployment of networked devices, which also enhances scalability.

Businesses can also reduce the cost of power cabling, electrical installation, and infrastructure by using existing network cables, making PoE a cost-effective solution for a variety of requirements. With PoE’s centralized power management, backup options, and built-in safety features, network devices remain operational during power outages, and automatically adjust power flow to prevent overloading or underpowering of devices. This ensures optimum performance and maximum uptime for all devices.

Flexibility supports numerous use cases

Many different industries can leverage PoE technology for a huge variety of use cases, taking advantage of some or all of its strengths depending on specific business needs. For example:

  1. IP cameras: Security cameras that rely on PoE simplify installation and are assured a reliable power supply, even in locations without electrical infrastructure.
  2. Wireless access points or outdoor CPEs: PoE enables flexible placement of WAPs and outdoor routers to ensure optimal wireless coverage in offices, warehouses, and large venues.
  3. VoIP phones: POE simplifies the deployment of VoIP phone systems by using a single cable for power and data transmission.
  4. IoT devices: PoE technology supports a wide range of IoT devices, from environmental sensors to smart lighting systems, which makes it easier for enterprises to more easily develop smarter integrated networks.
