Inseego 5G solutions enhance digital infrastructure for smart cities in southern Europe

The challenge – Multi-sector digital transformation

As part of a national effort to enable digital transformation in a variety of industries, a government in southern Europe needed a 5G pilot network that would demonstrate the power of advanced 5G technologies. Spanning several cities, the pilot project required both fixed and standalone wireless access capabilities in a railway station that serves over six million people annually, a bus station hub in a large port city, and a large conference center.

To address project requirements, a leading southern European telecommunications operator needed 5G solutions that could deliver high-speed connectivity to busy environments with many users and a substantial volume of traffic. Once deployed, the 5G solutions would have to enable large volumes of multimedia content to be both downloaded and uploaded quickly, in some cases in as little as 10 minutes.

The solution – Extreme speed and high capacity

The Inseego Wavemaker 5G CPE FW2010e was selected to deliver high-speed, millimeter wave (mmWave) connections using high-power mmWave antennas. The FW2010e extends the reach of 5G mmWave and provides high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity. It also offers varying network coverage with 5G sub-6 GHz and Cat 22 LTE.

The MiFi M2000 series 5G mobile hotspot was used to provide multi-gigabit, low-latency performance for mobile applications over a 5G SA network. The M2000 offers 5G performance and Wi-Fi 6 technology, as well as enterprise-grade security and advanced encryption to protect data. Fast, seamless 4G LTE fallback ensures operations remain seamless. All-day battery life and quick-charging technology, combined with an intuitive touchscreen, simple menus, and advanced management tools make it simple to set up, connect, and use.

The results - Enhanced operations and new opportunities

Inseego’s FW2010e and MiFi M2000 enabled delivery of advanced 5G capabilities at the busy public transportation hubs and the conference center. With reliable connections, the operator was able to support high-speed wireless access for a variety of bandwidth-intensive end user applications and infrastructure operations.

The FW2010e delivered unsurpassed performance: peak downlink speeds hit 2.4 Gbps, with sustained average speeds of 1.35 Gbps and uplink speeds from 230-270 Mbps. At the bus station, it was able to download large volumes of multimedia content to buses during their 10-minute stops; at the train station, it made access control at entrances and digital turnstiles possible; and at the conference center, it enabled video broadcasting of a large event.

The MiFi M2000 enabled free Wi-Fi for travelers at the train station, and high-speed connections at booths during events in the conference center. In pilot tests, it delivered peak downlink speeds of 1.3 Gbps, sustained average speeds of 966 Mbps, and uplink speeds of 158 Mbps.
