What is 5G NR?

NR (New Radio) is the name given to the next generation of cellular technology that is currently being developed by 3GPP. 5G NR is not an evolution of 4G LTE, but is a completely new air interface that has been designed from the ground up to support the very high data rates, low latency, and high reliability that will be required for 5G networks.

One of the key features of 5G NR is the use of a much wider frequency spectrum than is currently used for 4G LTE networks. 5G NR will make use of frequencies below 1 GHz, as well as frequencies in the millimetre-wave (mmWave) range that are above 24 GHz. The use of such a wide range of frequencies will allow 5G NR networks to achieve extremely high data rates.
