Educational institutions using broadband need CIPA-compliant solutions

In this digital age, internet access has become an essential tool for learning in educational institutions. With access to a wealth of information and resources, students are equipped with valuable tools to enhance their education. However, with such access comes the potential for exposure to harmful online content, cyberbullying, and other online dangers.

In response to these concerns, the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000. The purpose of CIPA is to promote internet safety for minors in schools and libraries by implementing internet safety policies and technology protection measures.

Any institution that leverages E-rate discounts is required to meet the CIPA requirements to do so. E-rate is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program that provides discounts to schools and libraries for telecommunication services and internet access.

Requirements include policies, technologies, and instruction

There are three primary requirements for CIPA compliance:

  • Internet safety policies
  • Technology protection measures
  • Education about appropriate online behavior

Internet safety policies include a set of rules and guidelines that outline acceptable and safe internet use for minors. These policies must also include measures to prevent access to harmful or inappropriate online content, such as pornography and websites that promote violence or drug use.

Technology protection measures refer to filters or other technology that blocks access to these types of websites. These measures must also be provided when using school or library computers with internet access and can also be applied to devices like smartphones provided by educational institutions.

Lastly, educational institutions must provide instruction to minors about appropriate online behavior, including safe and responsible internet use, cyberbullying awareness, and avoiding online predators.

Inseego solutions are field-tested and proven

Many educational institutions and organizations have leveraged Inseego wireless network solutions to provide internet access to their students.

For example, in 2020, Inseego partnered with The Source for Learning, a Virginia-based nonprofit organization that provides educational resources and tools for K-12 schools, school districts, and public libraries. The organization was facing a significant challenge providing equitable access to the internet for all students, especially those in underserved and rural areas.

Based on our in-depth understanding of CIPA compliance and expertise in providing reliable and secure wireless internet solutions, we were able to address The Source for Learning’s requirements. Inseego’s advanced in-building and outdoor Wi-Fi solutions were deployed to provide service coverage in schools and libraries. Content filtering and monitoring tools were integrated to comply with CIPA requirements.

With this deployment, The Source for Learning was able to address the access gap for students, who were unable to complete homework because of differing levels of internet access at home. The in-school access ensured that all students could complete homework at school, and provided equal learning opportunities for all students, regardless of income level.
